It was honor to be invited to write an essay for the Spokesman Review’s Summer Stories Series 2025. This is an annual series the paper produces with Washington State authors, and this year’s theme was ‘Winds of Change’. The editor said we could write anything involving wind and politics, and this story spilled so fast from my heart to the page. The novel I’m currently writing involves many of the same ideas, the anger and sadness, and ultimately - maybe - some hope.
